In 2018 THRIVE! Southern Lorain County began a program -- “Growing Nutrition,” to encourage local residents to consume more fresh produce for their health.
The program involved giving elevated garden boxes to those who face physical challenges when gardening at ground level. The program started out with 25 garden box recipients. It is now 75+! |

Wellington Boy Scout Troop 414 built this year’s boxes and delivered them to the new recipients in May.
Those who still had boxes from previous years received a $20 coupon to Hook’s Greenhouse to purchase soil, seeds, seedlings or starter plants, or any equipment needed for their vegetable garden. New box recipients were invited to pick up free seedlings at Wellington High School and had a chance to ask gardening questions of Ohio State University Extension's Master Gardener. |
