What, exactly, is pickleball? It is a thrilling paddleball sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or a composite material to hit a perforated plastic ball (like a wiffle ball) over a net.
The game is enjoyed by people of all ages, but is especially enjoyed by seniors. For all-around fitness, pickleball exercises all the major muscle groups, provides a great cardio workout and improves dexterity, mobility, agility and balance. Pickleball in WellingtonThe Village of Wellington and THRIVE! Southern Lorain County teamed up to bring pickleball, one of America’s fastest growing sports, to Wellington. The Courts opened in July.
In April 2021 the Village Council unanimously supported adding pickleball to the Wellington Community Park. The Village converted one of its three basketball courts to three pickleball courts. THRIVE! applied for, and was awarded, a Community Health Investment Grant funding by Lorain County Public Health (LCPH). The Community Health Investment Grant contains two categories: Community Grants, with a total award of up to $5,000 and System Change Grants, with a total award of up to $15,000. The funding is intended to focus on CHIP goals. These goals address chronic disease, maternal and child health, mental health, substance abuse and cancer in Lorain County.
With the LCPH grant, THRIVE! purchased nets and posts and will be responsible for laminated signage to show how to play pickleball with rules and scoring. THRIVE! is also making arrangements for free lessons for the public. |

Pickleball at Westwood
No reason to give up America’s favorite sport in the cold weather! THRIVE! joined hands with Westwood Elementary School to arrange for a pickleball court in the school’s gym. Play every Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. (school schedule depending).
Westwood is located at 305 Union Street, Wellington. A limited number of paddles are available to use for free. They are located in a box in the gym teacher's office in the gym, next to the pickleball nets. THEY MUST BE RETURNED TO THE OFFICE FOR OTHERS TO USE. Watch this great video on pickleball!
